Evolution Of Kacang Puteh
When started in 1930s by our great-granparents, the term "Kacang Puteh" did not exist. At begining, the snacks produced comprised
Ulunthu Vadai, Masala Vadai, Murukku, Acchi Murukku, Omopodi, and Kondai Kadalai only. The snacks were carried to nearby Ipoh Town daily for sales.
In Ipoh Town, the customers were mostly Malay and Chinese but very few Indians. It was difficult to sell products to majority of people. They were non-familiar
with taste, they unable to remember or pronounce Tamil snacks' names, and they had very few choices.
This encouraged our great-granparents and granparents to continuously make minor changes in recipe and methods to
suit every ethnics in Malaysia. They also introduced some new products to the market. The name "Kacang Puteh" was also
introduced to gain popularity among Malays and Chinese in Ipoh town. The evolution notably continued for 70years until
year 2000 before becoming well-known Malaysian-Indian product nationwide.
Currently, Kacang Puteh refers all snacks which were introduced by them, and also the Indian snacks which evolved in recipe/methods to become Malaysian
favourite.
